How to get one and what to check
How to get one

If you are overcharged
Ask to see the official fare sheet before paying: the driver has to show it. Complaints: Taxi Naranja on +598 99 239 077 or the Intendencia's traffic office on +598 4732 9898.
Where the meter starts
Under Salto's taxi ordinance (Decree 6,706/2013 of the Junta, enacted as 6,732/2014), the driver drops the flag "when the vehicle is occupied" (art. 30 b): on a trip you hail in the street or at a rank, the meter starts when you get in. To answer a call, however, the taxi sets off "with the flag down from wherever it is" (art. 30 h), so a phone or app booking can add the approach leg. And trips at an agreed price, the usual way out of town (Salto Grande, the airport, the hot springs), are negotiated "before starting" the service (art. 30 d): agree it before you get in.
