Things to do in Salto when it rains. The hot springs stay open.

In Salto, rain does not ruin the trip: it changes the order of the days. The hot springs open every day of the year, rain or not, and the water comes out of the ground at 39 to 46 °C whatever the sky is doing. This page puts everything under a roof on one screen: the covered pools at each hot springs, the museums with their hours, Energimundo and the library for a day with children, the dam, and a long lunch. The INUMET forecast is at the top.

01 · It rains

Rain changes the order of the days, not the trip

Uruguay has no rainy season. Rain comes in spells of a day or two, spread across the year, and INUMET's forecast picks them up 5 days ahead, with a colour-coded warning when a storm is going to be severe. A rainy week in Salto is rarely 7 days of rain. It is usually 2 or 3 wet days with dry ones in between.

At a beach, rain ruins the holiday. At the hot springs it is part of the experience. Salto's hot springs have always been busiest in the cold months, not the warm ones, and a rainy day at Daymán is, above all, a day with fewer people. What follows is the split: hot springs, museums, Energimundo, the dam and a long lunch on the wet days; the countryside, the river and the walks on the dry ones.

02 · The hot springs

Hot water under a roof

Rain is not a problem at the hot springs. Cold rain on your shoulders while the rest of you sits in water at 40 °C is one of the best feelings Salto has to offer. The only thing that clears the open-air pools is lightning, and only while it lasts, which here means hours rather than days. For that hour there are the covered pools: almost every hot springs has at least one.

At Termas del Daymán, the Complejo Médico Hidrotermal offers supervised balneotherapy and hydrotherapy, Scottish and Swedish showers, mud wraps and massage: a spa for the hour of the storm. Acuamanía, the water park next door, is open-air and seasonal (late September to early April, every day 10:30 to 18:30, separate ticket): one for a dry day.

03 · The city

Museums, library and theatre

Salto's museums are in the centre, a few blocks apart, and all three open on weekdays only, so a museum afternoon is a Monday-to-Friday plan. The hours are those of the Intendencia's Agenda Salto (October 2026) and change with the season, so it is worth checking on the day.

With children, the children's library of the Biblioteca Municipal Felisa Lisasola, at Artigas and 25 de Agosto, is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 16:00, to anyone who wants to read or join an activity. It reopened on 5 October 2026 after a refurbishment. Families and groups can arrange a visit on +598 4733 5220 or +598 4732 4180.

04 · The dam

Salto Grande and Energimundo

The dam is worth a visit on a grey day, and even more so when the river is high, because that is usually when the spillway is open. Guided visits from the Uruguayan side run Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 8:00 to 16:00, and last about 90 minutes: a short film, a talk, the bus across the dam to the viewpoint, and the machine hall. They are free and booked in advance, at saltogrande.org or on +598 4732 7777. No visits on 1 May, 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. Take your ID or passport, because the bus crosses the bridge.

Energimundo, Salto Grande's science museum beside the dam (Route 3, km 508), is the best wet-day plan with children: hands-on stations on water, wind, sun, biomass and tides, a full-scale model of the fish passage, a dome cinema and workshops. It is free and opens Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 18:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 18:00, last visit at 16:45.

On Fridays the Intendencia runs a free tourist bus: 9:00 from the Mini Terminal at Termas del Daymán and 9:30 from Plaza Artigas, taking in the port, the riverside avenue and the dam.

05 · The table

A long lunch

The other classic answer to a rainy day is a long lunch. Salto is where Tannat, now Uruguay's signature grape, was first planted, in Pascual Harriague's vineyard in the 1870s. A bottle from Salto, a grill and the rain on the other side of the glass make a whole afternoon.

06 · What waits

What moves to a dry day, and what does not change

  • Horse riding, walks, birdwatching, the scenic flight and the beach move to the dry days. The hot springs, the spa, the museums and Energimundo fill the wet ones.
  • Dirt roads to the estancias turn to mud after heavy rain. Your host will know the state of the road on the day, and it is best to arrive in daylight.
  • The boat to Concordia depends on the river, not the rain: the Prefectura closes the port and stops all navigation when the gauge reads 10.55 m. The height is live on the river page. The bridge over the dam is open regardless.
  • The riverside avenues and the beach at Arenitas Blancas are the first to flood when the river rises, from about 10.5 m.
  • Everything else carries on as normal: hot springs, hotels, restaurants, museums, long-distance buses and the flights to Nueva Hespérides airport.

Questions

What people ask when it rains

Are the hot springs in Salto open when it rains?
Yes. Termas del Daymán, Agua Clara and the municipal complex at Arapey open every day of the year from 8:00 to 22:00, rain or not. The water comes out of the ground at 39 to 46 °C whatever the sky is doing. The only thing that clears the open-air pools is lightning, and only while it lasts.
What happens at the hot springs in a thunderstorm?
While there is lightning, people leave the open-air pools and move to the covered ones: the main pool at Daymán has had a roof since November 2025, Agua Clara has a semi-covered pool, the municipal complex at Arapey has covered pools, and several hotels at Daymán have their own under a roof. Here a storm lasts hours, not days.
What can you do in Salto with children on a rainy day?
Energimundo, Salto Grande's free science museum, open every day; the children's library of the Biblioteca Felisa Lisasola, Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 16:00; and the covered pools at the hot springs.
Is there a rainy season in Salto?
No. Rain comes in spells of a day or two spread across the year, and a rainy week usually has 2 or 3 wet days with dry ones in between. INUMET publishes a 5-day forecast and colour-coded warnings when a storm is going to be severe.
Are the museums in Salto open at weekends?
No: the Gallino, Casa Quiroga and the Teatro Larrañaga open Monday to Friday. A wet weekend is for the hot springs, Energimundo (Saturdays and Sundays 12:00 to 18:00) and the dam (visits on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 8:00 to 16:00, booked in advance).

The longer version, Salto When the Weather Turns on visitsalto.com, also explains what happens in the city when the Uruguay River rises. The short list is in the Journal too: Salto on a Rainy Day.
